One of the challenges in teaching an introductory course in Economics in degree programmes for adults is to have a simple, readable and yet comprehensive introduction to the subject for people who have had no previous training in economics or who left the classroom a long time ago. Introduction to Economic Science seeks to address this problem.
The book starts with an overview of basic problems of scarcity, the definition of market, the role of government and technological possibilities. The microeconomics part covers demand and supply analysis, determination of consumer behaviour, the theory of production and cost and market structure. The third part of the book introduces students to fundamental macroeconomics with special focus on national income, unemployment, inflation, investment theory and money and banking. The fourth and final part deals with international trade theories, trade and commercial policies and international financial institutions.
In all these, our focus has been more than on the students who have to do much study on their own. Thus, the presentation has been simple and straight to the point. Levels 100 and 200 Economics students in the universities and all professional (business) students will find this book extremely useful.
